CFMOTO 550MT-X: 183 kg, longer KYB travel and independent ABS switches

526 cc and 40 kW meet 21/18-inch wheels, 230/220 mm suspension travel and 250 mm ground clearance. The useful change is the combination of dimensions and rider control.

Meet the motorcycle

The MT-X gives the 550 family a distinctly rough-road branch. CFMOTO’s domestic board pairs a larger twin with a listed 172 kg dry / 183 kg kerb mass, more suspension travel and separately switchable front ABS, rear ABS and TC. Those choices matter most when a long journey continues beyond the asphalt. This article separates the published dimensions from engineering interpretation; the site has not performed an independent road test.

EICMA 2026 launch, 3 November, internationally listed as MY27. The supplied Chinese board states 526 cc, not the 527 cc rounded value used in some reports. It also explicitly lists independent front/rear ABS and TC deactivation; operation and restart behaviour require the final manual.

UNDER THE SURFACE

The changes, explained.

01

More usable power, with mass definitions kept visible

The change

CFMOTO lists 526 cc, 40 kW, 52 Nm, 172 kg dry and 183 kg kerb on the MT-X board.

How it works

More available torque can help acceleration, but selected gearing determines force at the tyre. Lower carried mass also reduces the effort of changing direction and recovering a leaning bike.

What it means on a ride

For long transfers followed by a rough approach road, useful roll-on and manageable mass both matter. Add luggage and protection weight before comparing what you will actually manoeuvre.

The consideration · The board does not document its fuel-loading protocol. Keep 172 kg dry separate from 183 kg kerb, and compare rivals only when definitions and equipment match.

02

21/18-inch wheels and 250 mm clearance

The change

The MT-X has 21/18-inch wheels, 250 mm ground clearance and an adjustable 830–850 mm seat.

How it works

A larger wheel generally meets a ledge at a shallower angle. Clearance provides room below the bike, but compression, tyres, load and any underbody accessories change the space available in motion.

What it means on a ride

Rutted tracks and broken access roads may suit these dimensions. Pick a line that leaves room for the sump and wheels, and check foot reach on an uneven slope with the real luggage fitted.

The consideration · Tall dimensions can make a loaded stop or a sideways recovery harder. The lower seat setting does not guarantee the same ground clearance under every setup.

03

230/220 mm KYB travel is adjustment room

The change

The launch board calls the KYB suspension support-oriented and fully adjustable, with 230 mm front and 220 mm rear travel.

How it works

Travel provides motion range. Compression damping controls compression speed, rebound damping controls return speed, and spring/preload settings affect loaded ride height. Exact adjustment provisions require the manual.

What it means on a ride

On repeated corrugations, tune for controlled recovery with the touring load. On rocky approaches, leave compression margin rather than using the full travel repeatedly at excessive speed.

The consideration · Fully adjustable is not semi-active. A poor spring choice or overload cannot be repaired simply by turning damping adjusters to an extreme.

04

Independent front ABS, rear ABS and TC choices

The change

The domestic board explicitly permits independent deactivation of TC and front/rear ABS.

How it works

ABS limits wheel lock during braking; TC limits excessive driven-wheel slip. Separate control allows different choices for braking and drive, within the production system’s supported modes.

What it means on a ride

A gravel rider may choose a different rear-wheel strategy while retaining front ABS, if the manual supports that combination. Practise any change on a controlled surface before a loaded remote trip.

The consideration · Turning front ABS off increases the rider’s responsibility for avoiding a front lock. For public paved roads, retain assistance appropriate to conditions; verify settings after a stop or restart.

05

Ride-by-wire and a two-way quickshifter

The change

Ride-by-wire and a bidirectional quickshifter are confirmed on the MT-X board.

How it works

Electronic throttle maps a rider request through the control system. A quickshifter coordinates torque during requested shifts; suitability at very low rpm or high load depends on its calibration.

What it means on a ride

On paved transfers, it may reduce repeated clutch-hand actions. On a slow loose climb, choose a stable gear and keep the response predictable rather than shifting simply because the quickshifter is available.

The consideration · The MT-X board does not confirm the 550MT’s electronic clutch, cruise or radar. Check each model’s own equipment before choosing for motorway comfort.

Long journeys, different surfaces

Long paved transfers

Evaluate seat pressure, wind noise and engine speed at your legal cruising pace. The MT-X board does not confirm cruise control; take regular breaks and check the actual tyre’s road behaviour.

Gravel and corrugations

A visible line and a speed that lets the suspension recover are essential. Set tyre pressure for tyre construction and load, and retain enough margin for hidden holes and traffic.

Rocks and washouts

Use the published clearance as a starting dimension, then allow for loaded sag. Walk an uncertain section first and leave an exit route before committing.

Wet asphalt and return to road

Recheck ABS/TC after leaving the trail. Mud on tyres and braking surfaces can change response, so regain a stable road rhythm progressively.

Sand, mud and solo travel

183 kg before travel luggage is still substantial to recover. Wheel size and travel do not establish deep-mud ability or a safe water depth. Plan communication and a conservative turnaround point.

Price & budget

No MT-X price is listed on the reviewed official board. These are low-confidence editorial budget estimates, not an announced MSRP.

Official prices and clearly labelled estimates
Market / statusPrice
UK · editorial estimate£5,800–6,500, before OTR and luggage
China · editorial estimateRMB 30,000–38,000; market timing unconfirmed

The UK scenario uses the current official £5,699 450MT as a lower reference and the £6,999 800MT-X as an upper positioning reference. The assumed premium buys the revised engine and chassis rather than the 550MT touring electronics. China’s band is an independent domestic-market positioning assumption, not currency conversion. Final pricing may differ materially.

Where it fits

Choose the MT-X when the rough part is a meaningful part of the journey, and its taller dimensions suit you with luggage. The critical next checks are real loaded balance, suspension setup, tyre specification, fuel capacity and how the independent assistance settings work.
