KLE500 SE Smartride: less clutch work at every stop

A mechanical self-engaging clutch and tubeless equipment give this KLE500 a distinct role beyond a new colour scheme.

Meet the motorcycle

The most tiring part of a touring day is sometimes the slow queue before the interesting road begins. Smartride addresses that repeated task. Understanding where it acts is important: the rider still chooses gears and manages speed, balance and braking. Think through a loaded U-turn and a traffic stop before deciding whether this particular convenience solves your problem.

This is a separate 2027 SE Smartride guide. The existing 2026 KLE500 article is preserved. The manufacturer describes a fully mechanical system, not an electronic clutch or an automatic gearbox.

UNDER THE SURFACE

The changes, explained.

01

The clutch engages mechanically

The change

Smartride adds a centrifugal mechanism.

How it works

A centrifugal mechanism responds to rotational speed. It can manage engagement without a sensor-driven clutch actuator.

What it means on a ride

This can remove repeated feathering work during ordinary starts, making a queue less demanding on the left hand.

The consideration · Engagement feel, slope behaviour and limits must be learned on the delivered bike.

02

Gears are still your decision

The change

The conventional shift pedal and lever remain.

How it works

Clutch engagement and gear selection are separate jobs; automating one does not automate the other.

What it means on a ride

Pick a suitable gear before a slow climb and avoid expecting the system to rescue an unsuitable ratio.

The consideration · It should not be described as DCT, CVT or Y-AMT.

03

Slow riding needs a new routine

The change

Routine start and stop clutch actions are reduced.

How it works

At walking speed, small changes in drive and braking alter balance; a changed clutch response changes familiar coordination.

What it means on a ride

Practise a level-ground turn and an incline start without luggage before repeating them with your touring load.

The consideration · Convenience does not eliminate stalling scenarios or make every manoeuvre automatic.

04

Tubeless wheels affect the repair plan

The change

The Smartride trim includes tubeless equipment.

How it works

Tyre air retention and permitted repairs depend on the complete wheel and tyre assembly.

What it means on a ride

Pack compatible repair tools and a pump, and understand temporary repair limits before a remote route.

The consideration · A puncture plug is not suitable for every cut, sidewall injury or damaged rim.

05

Accessory editions are separate choices

The change

Genuine luggage and protection packages are offered.

How it works

Added hardware changes mass and where it is carried; a lower-effort clutch does not offset every added kilogram.

What it means on a ride

Choose the minimum equipment that serves your route, then check passenger room and low-speed balance.

The consideration · Edition names and included items can differ between markets.

Long journeys, different surfaces

Urban starts and stops

Learn the point at which drive arrives and use smooth throttle. Keep braking ready when creeping in traffic.

Long paved days

Once underway, a comfortable pace and sensible gear remain central; the start-assist feature does not decide your cruising ratio.

Gravel climbing

Select a gear before entering and practise the clutch response on a controlled surface. Avoid learning it midway up a loaded climb.

Downhill sections

Confirm engine-braking behaviour and the correct procedure in the specific manual before a remote descent.

Loaded parking

Check footing and ground firmness before stopping; reduced hand work does not change the need to support the bike.

Price & budget

Published prices are identified by country. Where a tariff has not been confirmed, no numerical estimate is substituted for a manufacturer price.

Where it fits

Smartride is most relevant when repeated starts are the problem you want to solve while retaining a conventional geared motorcycle. Learn its low-speed response before adding luggage.
