The road & its landscape

The Manizales–Mariquita corridor crosses Colombia’s Central Andes through Alto de Letras, linking high mountain country with the warmer eastern approach. This roadbook follows the national-road corridor through Padua and Fresno. Cloud, steep valley walls and changing roadside vegetation give the descent its long visual sequence.

This chapter belongs to the broad Colombian Andes map anchor. The separate Colombian marker labelled Cordillera Blanca remains under geographic review and is not linked to this route. Roads towards Los Nevados park, walking trails and cycle-event arrangements are outside the selected national-road corridor.

VIEWS FROM THE ROAD

Scenery along the road

Leaving Manizales, the view shifts from hillside city to higher pasture and cloud-covered slopes. Letras forms the mountain hinge of the journey. Eastward, the road works down through inhabited valleys, with Padua and Fresno giving practical breaks in the descent before Mariquita. This is a working road with heavy vehicles, so the best scenic stop is one that leaves the carriageway fully clear.

Manizales mountain exit

Start with fuel and warm layers, then follow the Mariquita corridor. Avoid confusing park-bound turnoffs with the continuous national road.

Alto de Letras

The high sector marks the transition between the two sides. Stop only where parking is permitted and fully off the road; cloud can remove the distant view.

Padua–Fresno–Mariquita descent

Break the eastern descent at established settlements, watching for trucks, works and changes in weather and temperature.

Road conditions & preparation

Check Invías road notices and local conditions on the day of travel. Caldas reported completion of works at six critical locations on 8 June 2026, including pavement and slope repairs; the same statement also described further investment, so it is not proof that all work or closure risk has ended. Allow for high-altitude cold, dense cloud, landslips and braking on the long descent. Confirm fuel and overnight stops in the towns.

Confirm the detailed road line, fuel and current access before using this chapter to plan a ride. Scenic-area transfers and off-road riding may require separate arrangements.

Sources & provenance

Summarised from public sources. A historic tourism plan describes a corridor, not current road access. Track authors retain ownership of their files.
