The road & its landscape
The D84 follows a rocky gateway into Niolu before reaching the forested country around Col de Vergio. This chapter stays in Corsica’s mountain interior.
Use the D84 road corridor. The old Scala mule path, summit walks and the D718 Corscia village branch are separate from the main line; captioned branch-road photographs identify that distinction.
Why ride here
A mountain-interior journey with a pronounced change from rock-bound valley to settled basin and wooded pass.
Scenery along the road
Scala di Santa Regina brings the Golo valley and exposed rock close to the carriageway. Beyond the confined approach, the Niolu basin opens beneath higher peaks. The Vergio section changes the foreground again, with mountain forest framing the upper road.
Scala di Santa Regina
Rock walls and the Golo valley create a close mountain-road setting; the historic path is a separate walking route.
Niolu basin
Around Calacuccia, settled ground gives scale to the surrounding high mountain walls.
Col de Vergio
The upper road reaches forested pass country. Distant peak and ridge panoramas may come from walking viewpoints away from the carriageway.
Roads from above
Look at the bends, road surface and landscape beside the carriageway. Each caption identifies the location; other roads in the range are marked separately.
Other roads in this range
Some photographs show other roads, visitor access or historical alignments in this mountain region. Their captions identify the difference from this chapter’s main corridor; vehicle access is not inferred from the image.

Road conditions & preparation
Plan fuel and breaks around the villages rather than the confined gorge. Check local road notices and pass weather before committing to the upper section.
Mountain landscapes
Photographs identify their actual location, author and licence. Viewpoints away from the riding corridor are stated in the captions; photographs are not verified ride records.

Sources & provenance
Summarised from public sources. A historic tourism plan describes a corridor, not current road access. Track authors retain ownership of their files.
