The road & its landscape

Sierra Gorda provides a mountain-road chapter on Mexico’s eastern highland system. This selection follows MEX-120 between Pinal de Amoles and Jalpan de Serra, linking cooler uplands with a lower settled valley. The main road is the subject; the reserve’s waterfall, cave and forest excursions are separate visits.

Querétaro’s official record identifies the Pinal–Jalpan connection beside Federal Highway 120 and distinguishes local side-road itineraries. This roadbook keeps only the public main-road segment. Bucareli, waterfalls, caves, hiking routes and onward Xilitla roads are not automatically included or declared suitable for motorcycles.

VIEWS FROM THE ROAD

Scenery along the road

The Pinal sector gives the ride a higher mountain setting before the road descends through changing slopes and inhabited places towards Jalpan. Vegetation and temperature can differ noticeably between the two ends. Cloud often limits the upper view, while the lower valley brings more town activity and services.

Pinal de Amoles preparation

Confirm MEX-120 towards Jalpan, weather and the day’s road status before descending.

Ahuacatlán corridor

Keep to the main road through the inhabited mountain slopes; side valleys require separate checks.

Jalpan arrival

Finish at town services and plan any onward Sierra Gorda journey separately.

Road conditions & preparation

Check current state civil-protection and road-authority information before departure, especially after rain. Recent reporting describes landslips and clearance work on Highway 120 in the wider Sierra Gorda, so this chapter is not a live reopening notice. Use daylight, leave a conservative margin for trucks and blind bends, confirm fuel in the towns and postpone if authorities cannot confirm passage.

Confirm the detailed road line, fuel and current access before using this chapter to plan a ride. Scenic-area transfers and off-road riding may require separate arrangements.
