The road & its landscape
This Slovenian chapter follows the forested karst uplands of Hrušica towards Col and the Vipava Valley. Regional roads connect settled plateaus with the descent to Ajdovščina, offering a Dinaric landscape distinct from the country’s Alpine passes. The selected ride stays on public roads and ends in the valley town.
The national museum identifies road access via Kalce to the Hrušica site; public road records identify the Col–Ajdovščina connection as R1-207. The chapter does not extend onto Roman ruins, forestry tracks, the ridge walking route or cycling-only paths. The Alpine roadbooks elsewhere in Slovenia remain separate.
Scenery along the road
The Kalce approach enters wooded high ground around the former Roman route at Hrušica. Around Col, forested upland gives way to a broader valley-facing edge. The descent reveals the contrast between the cool plateau and the lower Vipava setting. Ridge walks and exposed viewpoint trails are separate from the carriageway.
Kalce–Hrušica
Follow the public road through the forested high ground; stop separately for the archaeological site.
Col plateau edge
Confirm the Ajdovščina main-road direction and weather before the descent.
Ajdovščina arrival
Finish at valley services, with any motorway or Alpine extension planned separately.
Road conditions & preparation
Check Promet.si and local signs for closures, roadworks and weather. Strong bora winds, fog, ice and debris can make the plateau edge and descent unsuitable; postpone when conditions are poor. Confirm fuel before leaving the main towns, allow for local traffic on narrow sections, and use permitted parking for any museum or viewpoint walk.
