The road & its landscape
Northern Tunisia has a forested mountain chapter quite different from its dry interior. RN17 climbs inland from Tabarka towards Aïn Draham, entering the Kroumirie hills at the eastern end of the Atlas system. The selected ride focuses on the main road and the red-roofed hill town, with cork-oak forest forming the setting.
This is a conditional main-road chapter, not a forest-track itinerary. The route ends at Aïn Draham; Babouche border facilities, Hammam Bourguiba and Feija National Park are separate journeys. TAP reported a rain-related landslip affecting the Babouche arrival lane on 9 April 2026, illustrating why nearby border access cannot be inferred from an open town approach.
Scenery along the road
The inland climb replaces the lower coastal setting with enclosed wooded slopes. Where the canopy opens, the road offers a sense of the surrounding folds rather than a continuous wide panorama. Aïn Draham’s roofs sit against the forested hillside. Fog, rain and winter weather can change both the look of the ride and its practicality within a short distance.
Tabarka inland departure
Take the signed Aïn Draham direction on RN17. Treat the town as a service base before entering the forest climb.
Kroumirie forest slopes
The riding interest lies in the wooded mountain road. Forest lanes and walking paths are excluded, even where a general map shows a connection.
Aïn Draham town
Finish among the hillside buildings, choosing an established parking place. Continue to other valleys only after a separate road-status check.
Road conditions & preparation
Confirm RN17 with the regional equipment service and local accommodation immediately before riding. The area has documented landslip and winter disruption; do not assume a dated reopening covers today’s journey. Use daylight, allow for wet leaves, fog and falling debris, and turn back if barriers or officials stop traffic. Stay on the public road and check current regional travel advice before arranging border-area detours.
