The road & its landscape
The public-road connection between Fort Portal and Kasese follows the populated eastern side of the Rwenzori region. It offers a mountain-foot journey through cultivated country, settlements and changing valley views. The high peaks are weather-dependent background, not a promise of a summit view or a motorable crossing of the Rwenzori massif.
The national-park management plan identifies approaches via Fort Portal and Mubuku, and the local tourism gateway lists the Fort Portal–Kasese road corridor. This chapter stays on the public main road. Trekking trailheads, park interior, safari tracks and the DRC border are excluded; protected-area entry is a separate arrangement.
Scenery along the road
Around Fort Portal the setting is greener and more enclosed. Southbound through the Hima and Mubuku area, the route meets lower, broader settled country with the Rwenzori slopes to the west. Kasese provides an urban finish and a useful planning base. The interest is the contrast between the mountain edge and everyday roadside life, rather than an isolated high pass.
Fort Portal departure
Confirm the Kasese main-road direction and local conditions before leaving the city. The separate Bundibugyo road is outside this chapter.
Hima–Mubuku foothills
Follow the inhabited main corridor, watching for industrial vehicles and activity around settlements. Park approach tracks are separate.
Kasese arrival
Finish in town and use established accommodation to check any onward plan. A clear road to Kasese does not establish access to mountain trekking routes.
Road conditions & preparation
Check both road conditions and current security advice before committing. The UK foreign office describes attacks and military activity in western border districts, including incidents in Kasese and Bundibugyo; follow current Ugandan security instructions and local advice. Ride in daylight, avoid border detours, and allow for buses, trucks, pedestrians and livestock. Confirm fuel at the towns and avoid stopping on bridges or blind bends.
