The road & its landscape
Uruguay’s mountain riding is on a small scale: rounded ridges and open rural views rather than high alpine passes. This chapter follows Ruta 12 south from Minas into the Sierras de Minas landscape and towards the Ruta 60 junction. It is a regional hill-road ride within the wider Cuchilla Grande setting.
The transport ministry identifies Ruta 12 as the Minas connection and records work on Ruta 12 and Ruta 60. The local planning authority identifies Sierras de Minas as a tourism landscape. This chapter uses the main roads only; Cerro Verdún paths, Salus reserve, private estates and waterfall access roads are separate visits.
Scenery along the road
The town departure gives way to grass-covered slopes, rock outcrops and agricultural land. The low relief lets the sky take a large part of the view, while bends reveal successive folds of the hills. The interest is in the road’s gentle movement through the landscape. Private estancias and reserve interiors seen from the highway are not automatically visitor access points.
Minas service stop
Start from town with fuel and a confirmed route south. The ride is a hill-road chapter, so summit trails are not navigation shortcuts.
Ruta 12 hill country
Rounded hills and rural land form the roadside sequence. Choose marked or otherwise permitted stopping places rather than private gates.
Ruta 60 junction and return decision
Use the junction as a clear planning boundary. Continue only with a separately checked road and fuel plan, or retrace the confirmed approach.
Road conditions & preparation
Confirm the exact Ruta 60 junction, current pavement and works before departure. The ministry’s rehabilitation record is historical, not a present-day surface guarantee. Allow for strong crosswinds, rain, agricultural traffic and loose material at road edges. Refuel in Minas and arrange an explicit return or onward route; do not assume every farm lane on the map is public.
