Riding equipment

Keep a clear connection to the bike.

Choose gloves and boots together with the controls, cuffs and trousers they will meet.

Practical guideReviewed 23 October 2026

Your gloves and boots are the equipment you use at every junction and every stop. Evaluate them on the motorcycle, not only while standing in a shop. The aim is secure coverage with enough feel to use the controls without changing your natural movement.

01

Start with retention and reach

Fasten the glove at the wrist and check that it does not pull off easily. On a parked motorcycle, reach every lever and switch without straining the fingers. Look for bunching in the palm when gripping the bar. Check that the glove cuff and jacket sleeve work together instead of leaving a gap.

02

Warmth without losing control

An insulated glove may change the feel of the brake and throttle; a ventilated glove gives up weather protection. Try both with your actual jacket. If carrying a second pair, keep it dry and easy to reach. Heated equipment should be installed and powered according to its own instructions and the bike’s electrical limits.

03

Test the boot at the controls

Wear the socks you plan to ride in. Check heel security, toe room and how the ankle closure feels when seated. With the motorcycle safely supported and engine off, practise shifting and rear-brake movement. A stiff boot may need a compatible control adjustment by a competent person; do not force the foot into an awkward position.

04

Look after the contact points

Inspect palm seams, closures, boot soles and areas rubbing against the motorcycle. Follow each product’s drying instructions rather than putting wet gear directly on a heater. Strong boots and gloves are part of suitable riding clothing, but comfort in a showroom does not demonstrate crash performance. Check the maker’s protection information separately.

The choice to make

More stiffness and insulation can change control feel. Choose the protective equipment you can operate correctly, then test the complete outfit on a short ride.

BEFORE YOU GO

Your departure check

  • All levers and switches reachable with gloves on.
  • Wrists and ankles covered in the seated position.
  • Boot tested at gear lever and rear brake, engine off.
  • Closures, soles and seams inspected.
