Begin with your head shape and the way you ride. A lighter shell, a peak or a flip-up chin bar can be useful, but none resolves a poor fit. Use the same glasses and thin liner you expect to wear on the trip when trying helmets.
Fit before features
Measure your head as a starting point, then try several shapes. Fasten the strap and check for even, close contact without painful pressure. Gently rotate and tilt the helmet: it should not slide independently. Follow SHARP’s retention check with a trained fitter. A size label alone cannot confirm fit.

Try the complete setup
Wear it for long enough to notice a developing pressure point. Check the visor seal, glasses clearance and whether you can operate vents and the buckle with your riding gloves. If adding communication equipment, use approved mounting positions and confirm that speakers do not create pressure. Do not cut the impact liner.
Keep your view clear
Inspect the visor for scratches and clean it with the helmet maker’s method. Pack a soft cloth separately from gritty tools. Before a wet or cold morning, check your compatible anti-fog insert and practise opening ventilation while stopped. Choose a visor suitable for the light you will actually ride in.

Inspect, then decide
After an impact, consult the manufacturer about inspection or replacement; an intact outer shell is not proof of an undamaged liner. Record the purchase date and follow that model’s service-life guidance. For Europe–China travel, check the actual approvals accepted in each destination rather than treating a foreign rating as universal permission.
The choice to make
Choose among helmets that fit correctly first. Features become valuable only when you can use them comfortably for the whole day.
Your departure check
- Strap secured; no slipping or painful pressure.
- Visor clean; glasses and gloves tested together.
- Approved accessories fitted without altering the liner.
- Impact history and model-specific replacement guidance checked.
