Riding equipment

Dress for the whole journey.

Build a clothing system for cool starts, warm valleys and changing mountain weather.

Practical guideReviewed 23 October 2026

Plan clothing around the coolest part of the moving day, the warmest stop and the chance of rain. Separate the jobs of moisture management, warmth, impact protection and abrasion resistance. This makes it easier to change one layer without losing another essential function.

01

Give each layer a job

A comfortable base layer sits next to the skin; a removable mid layer adds warmth. The protective system needs both suitable impact protectors and an abrasion-resistant garment. A casual rain jacket does not acquire those protective functions because it covers armour. Confirm the intended combinations in the manufacturer’s instructions.

02

Fit in the riding position

Sit on your motorcycle while stationary. Reach the bars, bend your knees and turn to look behind. Check that the jacket and trousers overlap or connect as intended, cuffs cover the wrists, and protectors stay over their intended areas. Repeat with your thickest planned mid layer, not just a T-shirt.

03

Change layers before the pass

Keep the next layer close to the luggage opening. Add or remove it at a safe stop before the temperature changes sharply. A simple packing routine helps: dry sleeping clothes stay separate, a damp base layer gets its own bag, and the rain shell remains reachable without unpacking the entire motorcycle.

04

Care preserves the system

Read the care label on each removable part. Cleaning methods for textiles, membranes and leather are not interchangeable. Remove protectors only where the care instructions request it, and reinstall them in the right pockets and orientation. Check seams, zips and protector positions again after cleaning.

The choice to make

A modular outfit gives you more adjustment, but also more pieces to manage. Practise the changes before a multi-day trip.

BEFORE YOU GO

Your departure check

  • Full movement tested with the thickest planned layer.
  • Impact protection and abrasion layer both present.
  • Warm and rain layers reachable at the first stop.
  • Dry evening clothing packed separately.
