Luggage & camp

Pack light. Ride further.

Work from the motorcycle’s load limits, then give every item a place and a purpose.

Practical guideReviewed 23 October 2026

Start with a packing list rather than a bigger box. Separate what you need while riding, what comes into the room and what stays with the motorcycle. Then weigh the loaded bags, including their mounting equipment, and compare the complete setup with all applicable limits.

01

Capacity is not payload

Use the motorcycle manual and the exact rack and luggage instructions. The vehicle’s total permitted weight includes riders and equipment, while each carrier or case can have its own restriction. A larger empty bag does not increase the chassis or rack limit. Do not copy another model’s kilogram or speed figures.

02

Put weight where it belongs

Keep heavy items low and toward the centre, and distribute the load evenly between sides. Place items needed during the day close to an opening instead of on top of every heavy item. Follow the manual for load-related suspension settings and tyre pressures, and account for any passenger before you pack.

03

Choose a workable bag system

Hard cases offer a defined shape; soft bags can adapt their volume. Compare the complete system for mounting security, locking needs, width, access and removal. Neither construction removes the need to secure every loose end. Confirm clearance from the exhaust, chain, wheel and suspension through the manufacturer’s specified checks.

04

Rehearse the whole packing routine

Make a short local ride with the real load before the trip. At a safe early stop, check latches, straps and any movement or rubbing; repeat during the day. Keep a small overnight bag together so that daily unloading does not require dismantling the entire system. Remove unused duplicates after the rehearsal.

The choice to make

A little unused space is useful. Fill the bags to suit the trip rather than adding equipment simply because another pocket is empty.

BEFORE YOU GO

Your departure check

  • Riders, bags and mounting equipment included in weight checks.
  • Vehicle, rack and individual bag limits all checked.
  • Straps secured; exhaust and moving parts kept clear.
  • Full-load test ride and first-stop check completed.
