Navigation that travels with you.

Offline maps, GPX checks, mounting and power: prepare the whole chain before leaving.

Practical guideReviewed 23 October 2026

A navigation setup includes the route information, the app, the screen mount and a way to keep it powered. Prepare them together. Before a long ride, rehearse the exact workflow you will use after a missed turn or a lost connection, while safely parked.

01

Understand what a GPX contains

A GPX may carry tracks, routes and waypoints. A recorded track describes a path; a navigation route may be recalculated using the device’s map and settings. Some tracks are drawn plans rather than ridden records. Inspect the imported line and key stops, and compare the calculated result before following it. A line on a map does not prove access or current road conditions.

02

Prove the offline setup

Download the regions you need and open them before leaving. In a no-network test, check the start, destination, route display and any search or recalculation you intend to rely on; offline capability varies by app. Keep the accommodation name, address and important stops in a separate accessible note as a fallback.

03

Mount for the actual device

Check the device and mount maker’s compatibility instructions, secure retention and cable clearance at full steering lock. Apple warns that motorcycle vibration can damage iPhone camera systems and advises against mounting on high-power or high-volume motorcycles. A vibration damper does not guarantee prevention; consider a suitable dedicated navigator where needed.

04

Make power and backup predictable

Use a compatible, protected power connection within the motorcycle’s limits, with strain relief and connectors kept as instructed. Test it during a short ride and check how it behaves after ignition-off. Carry the cable you actually need, plus a separate charged backup device or power bank where appropriate. Stop safely before changing routes or handling the screen.

The choice to make

The useful backup is the one you have already opened and tried. Prepare a simple recovery routine before adding more devices.

BEFORE YOU GO

Your departure check

  • Imported GPX line and recalculated route compared.
  • Required offline functions tested without a connection.
  • Mount and power cables checked through full steering movement.
  • Accommodation and key stops saved in a separate backup.
